EV Charging at Home

Smart, Cost-Effective EV Charging at Home

For the majority of electric vehicle owners across Norwich and Norfolk, charging at home is the ultimate convenience. Imagine waking up every morning to a fully charged battery, completely bypassing public charging stations.

By installing a dedicated 7kW home charge point, you can safely plug in overnight and enjoy the most cost-effective way to power your vehicle.

Why Upgrade to a Dedicated Home Charger?

  • Wake Up Ready: A professional home installation is significantly faster and safer than using a standard domestic plug, ensuring your car is ready to go when you are.

  • Slash Your Running Costs: Charging overnight allows you to take full advantage of cheaper, off-peak time-of-use energy tariffs.

  • Go Off the Grid: Are you looking to maximise your savings? By pairing your EV charger with a solar PV system and battery storage, you can charge your car using your own free, green energy—a smart investment that more and more of our Norfolk customers are choosing.

Maximise Your Savings: Is Grant Funding Available?

Government funding for home installations has changed. While standard homeowners are no longer eligible for the old EVHS scheme, OZEV grants of up to £500 are still available for certain residents, including:

  • Renters and tenants

  • Flat owners

  • Landlords and property managers

As OZEV-approved installers, we know the criteria inside out. We will quickly assess your eligibility and handle the entire application process on your behalf, making your installation as straightforward and affordable as possible.

  • Up to 40 sockets: Claim up to £20,000 in total funding across your property portfolio.

  • Eligibility: Applies to dedicated off-street parking reserved for staff, fleets, or visitors.

Education Sector Bonus: State-funded schools and colleges can claim an increased subsidy of up to £2,000 per socket (up to 40 sockets).

Our installations and advice align strictly with official UK government funding rules:

EV Charger FAQ

How long does it take to install a home EV charger?

For a standard installation where the charger is located close to your main consumer unit (fuse box), it typically takes between 2 to 4 hours. Our team works efficiently to ensure minimal disruption to your day.

Will installing a charger overload my home’s electrical supply?

No. Before any installation, our technical team conducts a survey of your home’s main fuse capacity and installation area. Furthermore, the modern smart chargers we install (such as the Zappi) feature intelligent “load balancing.” This means the charger automatically adjusts its power draw if you are running heavy appliances in the house at the same time, completely protecting your main fuse.

Can I get an EV charger if I don’t have a driveway?

To install a standard wall-mounted charger, you must have designated, private off-street parking (like a driveway or an assigned parking bay). If you only have on-street parking, you cannot run standard cables across public pavements due to safety regulations. However, government grant support is available if you install an approved cross-pavement solution, such as a certified charging gully.

Can I have my charger installed in my garage?

Yes, garages are an ideal location for an EV charger. To make it happen, we require one of the following:

  • A direct cable run from your main building’s consumer unit to the garage.
  • An existing, independent consumer unit inside the garage that we can connect to.

During your free on-site survey, our supervisors will check your current electrical infrastructure and map out the best possible route for the installation.

I am a landlord / I live in a rented property. Can I install a charger?

Absolutely. We specialise in installations for both standard residential homes and rental properties. If you are a tenant, you will just need written permission from your landlord or freeholder before we can begin. If you are a residential landlord, adding an EV charger is a fantastic way to future-proof your property portfolio and attract long-term tenants.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger?

Because every property requires a different cable length, routing, and electrical setup, costs vary. We don’t believe in blind estimates or generic guesswork. We provide a free, no-obligation visual assessment of your property so we can give you an incredibly accurate, transparent quote.

Are there Government grants available to help with the installation cost?

Yes, the government’s OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) grant scheme offers up to £500 per socket off the installation price, but it is strictly ring-fenced for specific groups. You are eligible if you:

  • Rent your home (any property type) and have private off-street parking.
  • Own and live in a flat with an assigned parking space.
  • Are a residential landlord looking to upgrade your rental properties (up to 200 sockets per year).

Note: please check https://www.gov.uk/guidance/electric-vehicle-chargepoint-grants for full eligibility criteria

Is it cheaper to charge my car at home than at public chargers?

Yes, significantly cheaper. Public rapid chargers are subject to commercial energy rates and profit margins. Charging at home allows you to take advantage of domestic energy rates. If you switch to an EV-specific off-peak electricity tariff, or link your charger directly to a Solar PV system, you can charge your car for a fraction of the cost of public networks.

What is the difference between a "tethered" and "untethered" charger?

  • Tethered: The charging cable is permanently attached to the wall unit (like a petrol pump). It’s highly convenient because you just pull up and plug in, but you are locked into that specific cable length and plug type.
  • Untethered (Socket-only): The unit has a socket but no attached cable. You plug your own cable into it. It looks neater on the wall and allows you to use different cables, but requires you to take your cable out of the boot every time you charge.

Which charger is best for me?

While we work with and install a wide range of manufacturers, we highly recommend Zappi and Rolec for their reliability and performance:

  • Zappi is the ultimate choice if you have (or plan to get) solar panels. It can eco-charge your car using 100% green surplus energy generated from your roof.
  • Rolec is a highly robust, dependable, and cost-effective option, perfect for standard domestic setups or heavy-duty commercial fleet environments.

Have a specific charger in mind? Let us know! While we highly recommend Zappi and Rolec, we can source and install almost any preferred brand to meet your exact requirements. Just chat with our team first so we can verify compatibility with your property’s electrical setup.

How fast will a home charger charge my electric vehicle?

A standard residential smart charger operates at 7kW. Depending on your vehicle’s battery size, this typically adds around 25 to 30 miles of range per hour of charging, making it perfect for a full overnight charge.

Are your installations fully certified?

Yes. We are fully OZEV and MCS approved, NICEIC certified, and Alcumus Safe Contractor accredited. Every single installation we sign off is completely compliant with the absolute latest electrical regulations, giving you total peace of mind.
