Working on any projects within a funeral home requires a deep sense of respect and sensitivity. Recently, we were asked to upgrade the lighting at a local funeral home, replacing the original fixtures and fittings. We were asked to create an atmosphere of calm and peace appropriate for viewing loved ones, while also ensuring sufficient brightness for staff to work comfortably and safely, particularly during the night.
We understood that the lighting within a funeral home plays a crucial role in setting a tone of reverence and tranquillity. Harsh or overly bright lighting could detract from this atmosphere, while insufficient illumination could lead to eye strain for staff working diligently through the night. Our approach was to find a good balance between the two needs.
This involved careful consideration of light temperature, placement and brightness. In viewing rooms, we opted for softer, warmer tones that create a comforting and peaceful ambiance, allowing families and friends to focus on remembrance. Simultaneously, we ensured that the overall light levels could be adjusted to provide adequate brightness particularly during overnight operations.
A significant aspect of this project was the need to carry out the installation and wiring work with the utmost care and consideration, often during the funeral home’s operating hours. We worked closely with the funeral home to ensure that there was little to no disruption to their services. Our electricians approached their tasks with quiet efficiency and diligence.
This meant adhering to strict protocols, working discreetly, and being mindful of ongoing services and visitors. Dust and noise were kept to an absolute minimum, and work areas were carefully managed to avoid any intrusion on the peaceful atmosphere.
The successful completion of this lighting upgrade highlights the importance of minimising disruption to the work area.
